The power of Facebook as a fundraising tool continues to evolve as more people join and more applications are being developed to assist nonprofits. As mentioned earlier, the first six months of 2009 saw a 50-percent jump in total donations through the Facebook Causes application. Still, the greatest value of Facebook to a nonprofit is a platform for engaging donors and volunteers. It provides an opportunity to grow and maintain relationships in different ways than does the organization’s homepage.

Consider the following statistics from Facebook.com, as of this writing:• More than two hundred million active users.

• More than a hundred million users log on to Facebook at least once each day.

• More than two-thirds of Facebook users are outside of college.

• The fastest-growing demographic is those thirty-five years old and older.

• The average user has 120 friends on the site.

• More than 3.5 billion minutes are spent on Facebook each day (worldwide).

• More than 850 million photos are uploaded to the site each month

• More than eight million videos are uploaded each month.

• More than 2.5 million events are created each month.

• There are more than twenty-five million active user groups on the site.

• There are more than thirty million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices.
